In Papyrus 1.0.2 UML, I see that the Properties tab for Components includes a Comments section with separate enumerations of "Applied comments" and "Owned comments." What is the difference between these two different types of comments?

In addition, a Comment can be added as an Element to a Model. What are the guidelines or best practices for selecting between the use of a Comment element, Applied comments, and Owned comments?

Hi,

The "ownedComment" is a containment relationship between the owner and the comment. It has little semantics value. The "Applied Comments" is the list of comments annotating the current element (It is the opposite of the Comment#annotatedElement relationship).

In Papyrus, when you add an "Applied Comment", it is also added (Under the hood) to "Owned Comments", but we don't display it in the properties view because it would be mostly redundant.

When you create a Comment in a Class Diagram (on the canvas), it is added to the Diagram's Context "Owned Comments". Then, when you create a Comment Link between this comment and a Class, it is added to the "Applied Comments" of the Class

Camille

Thanks for the clarification. The three comment types make more sense to me now.
