Hey all,
Long time lurker, first time poster.
So, I have been very happy with m8 and it's been stable enough for me
that I've switched to using it as my eclipse environment for work. The
chief piece of software I lack is... VE!
Unfortunately, the last few integration builds of VE were less than
stellar, stability-wise. I note that there's a new integration build,
but it specifically requires a newer Eclipse than M8.
So, O cherished developers, just how "required" is the new eclipse for
the new VE build? I would rather stay with a "milestone" m8 build than
update, what do you think?
And, yes, I *KNOW* you need matching versions of EMF, GEF, and the
listed Eclipse in order for VE to not cause the universe to implode. I'm
just talking real-world feasibility, here...
And, unconnected, thanks for VE! It's my single most desired bit of
software since I started using eclipse sometime back in 2.0-land...

Hey,
I have a quick suggestion before replies... Perhaps it would be a Good
Thing (tm) if one of the knowledgeable devs posted a short note each
week or two which looked like this:
WORKINGEST BUILD OF THE (MONTH|WEEK|DAY):
VE I20040614 + Eclipse 3.0m9
Since only the devs know when a relatively "stable" island has been
reached with a build (even amongst I-builds), you're the only ones
qualified to make this subjective decision. I know that this is the
point of Integration builds, but a two-line blessing of a certain
pairing/build would certainly quash the "which build?" posts in the
newsgroup we see when newcomers arrive. Perhaps something with a
standard title like:
FAQ: Blessed Builds 06/14/2004
and the two lines I mentioned above. Not a status report, not a buglist,
but (really) a two liner. It isn't meant to increase paperwork for devs,
so status/bugs don't have any place in such a post.
Just a suggestion. Might be good... Would certainly be good for me.

Ah well... :)

Well, the I20040415 was the one that seemed to be "unstable" to me (I
mean that in a wholly scientific way, honest). Well - basically I
upgraded from an older (I think 0325?) integration build and
crashes/errors occured more frequently...
So perhaps not so scientific but it wasn't the most stellar build for my
purposes.
At any rate, thanks again for your efforts. I'm looking forward to the
stable m8 release, and keep up the bugfixing! I'm sure everybody here
really appreciates VE (so much so that we all use bleeding-edge
half-finished software *grin*).
Ciao,
Idan

As someone else has already noted (boy, we just got it out there a
couple of hours ago and someone already saw it and tested it!! :-) ),
M1RC1 (Release candidate 1 for M1) is available and is pretty stable. It
is based on M8 Eclipse.

The post-M8 Eclipse drivers changed some API's, so the I20040422 will
only work with the Eclipse I20040422 driver. It had to change to use new
API that doesn't exist in Eclipse M8 because the old API was removed.
We are putting the final touches on an actual M8 stable driver.
Hopefully sometime next week. We plan to have an M8-candidate
integration build later on Monday. If everything works, we will be
promoting it to a stable build.
I'm not guaranteeing anything, but try the I20040415 driver. It is on
the M8 and a little more stable, but it may have some bad problems
because it is a week old and we've cleaned up a lot since then. Last
week we had a test pass to try to find as many bugs as we could, and
we've been fixing the major ones all of this week. The ones that would
stop it from being a stable build. After the stable build is shipped we
will go back to heads-down development.
And thank you very much for the compliment!
