Words to put in your copyright statements

There are two types of copyright notices in files: those for code resources and those for non-code program resources. Copyrights in code are mandatory, and copyrights in documentation are mandatory, and copyrights in other files are nice-to-have.

Code resources
Code resources can be anything from .java to .cpp or .h files. The type of programming language does not matter. In code resources, the standard Eclipse copyright should be used. The copyright statement is placed directly at the top of the source file. The first line of code begins directly under the copyright statement. For example, the package declaration for Java source files is placed directly under the copyright statement:

/**********************************************************************
 * Copyright (c) {DATE} {INITIAL COPYRIGHT OWNER} {OTHER COPYRIGHT OWNERS}.
 * All rights reserved. This content is made available under
 * the terms of the Eclipse Public License v1.0

 * $Id$

 * Contributors:
 * {INITIAL AUTHOR} - Initial contribution
 **********************************************************************/
package org.eclipse.tptp.platform;

Program resources that are neither code nor API
There are a variety of program resources that are not code. Program resources include documentation (.html, .htm) resources, build resources, and files that define attributes of the program (plugin.xml, feature.xml, _toc.xml, .exsd).

Note that you do not need to put a copyright in makefiles or other resources used for the build unless the build technique is innovative itself.

.html, .htm, .xml, and .exsd files:

<!--
