Problems installing TPTP [message #83934] Fri, 22 September 2006 09:14 Go to next message

Hi

I've been trying to get TPTP on my working on my machine without success.
So I tried to do everything from scratch.

- I downloaded eclipse-SDK-3.2-linux-gtk.tar.gz and made a clean install
- I used a completely new workspace.
- I used the Software Update feature to install TPTP from Calisto
Discovery Site (I used Select Required)
- Restart after installation
- I changed the configuration for the Integrated Agent Controller to
X Always running
X Enable logging - Info
- Restart
- Run -> Profile...
- Attach - Java Process -> New
- Host Tab: Local Direct Connection is selected
- Agents Tab: no agents are available

I've attached tptp_iac.log below. Any ideas what could be wrong?

/markus

The problem is you don't have any agents to attach to. Instead of trying
to attach to an agent, try to simply launch your application in profiling
mode. Please see the following introductory document on Profiling with
TPTP:
http://www.eclipse.org/articles/Article-TPTP-Profiling-Tool/ tptpProfilingArticle.html

Also see the following documentation for tips on speeding up your
profiling session:

Thanks for the reply

But it still won't work. I have the new eclipse installation as mentioned
in my first post and opened an old workspace I worked with for a long
time. Tried to launch in profiling mode a java server with just the
modification necessary added in the monitor tab in the launch (I selected
just Basic Memory analysis in the Monitor tab). I also tried to profile a
simple java application with right-clicking Profile As -> Java
Application.

I both cases the only thing that happens is that the application shows up
in the Debug tab in the Debug perspective and shows up in Profiling
Monitor tab in The profiling perspective. But the console window remains
completely empty and the Memory Statistics tab just displays "No memory
statistics is available for display. (cont.)" The application don't seam
to start at all.

The tptp_iac.log is attached below.
Any ideas?

Thanks
Markus

From the log file, it looks like you're using the Integrated Agent
Controller (IAC) to profile your application. Can you try using the Agent
Controller instead? See the "Getting started with Agent Controller" guide
on the documentation page:
http://www.eclipse.org/tptp/home/documents/index.html

That's correct, I've primarily tried to get the IAC to work, although I've
also tried to get the external to work before. Finally today I got the
external to work after disabled IAC in Window -> Preferences -> Agent
Controller -> Integrated Agent Controller -> Setting -> Enable (off). It
was enabled by default.

IAC seems to be broken and also blocking the external from working
(atleast for me). Should I report this as a bug somewhere or is just that
I didn't read the documentation well enough?

Regards
Markus

The reason why IAC was blocking the Agent Controller is probably because
you had the "Always Running" option on. This option is off by default.
The reason why IAC didn't work in the profile scenario is because of a
poor usability issue with IAC. It probably wasn't able to resolve the
required DLL files (such as piAgent.dll) because they weren't in your
PATH. I have no idea why you weren't able to launch a Java app in
profiling mode with IAC though. If you think this is a defect, feel free
to report it.
