have fields that are defined as string in the BIRT report definition
that contain leading zeros. The export treats that data as numbers -

I guess it would be a nice feature if the fields I was exporting were
identified as decimal in the report, but I want them treated as strings.

Is this a bug, is it intended to work this way, or is there some way
around this?

I found it !!
At least a temporary solution.

if (dataSetRow["NAME"] != null) String.fromCharCode(160)+""+dataSetRow["NAME"]

Whith this caracter String.fromCharCode(160), excel not delete the leading zero.
