Nothing special

- Make sure to backup Hudson home
- If you are using authentication and authorization from plugin, then disable security
- Start with Hudson 3.1.2
- When the initial setup page appears, make sure to install all the plugins updates

Once Hudson is up and running, if you disabled security, then re-enable it

Tip: In Hudson 3.x, the security information is saved in hudson-security.xml. You can copy the original security information from the config.xml to this file.

Hi Praskash,

I am planning to do upgrade with automatic option in Hudson. Please let me know why we need to disable the security and update the plugins? cant we automatically update its own?

Do we need to install all the installed plugin again for the new upgrade version manually?

also this hudson-security.xml is only for latest version? Can I know the location of this file ?

You don't have to disable security, if you use buit-in Authentication (such as bundled daabase or LDAP) and authentication (ex. matrix-based, project-based etc).

You don't have to manually install plugins, the initial setup screen will display the list of plugins to be upgraded and helps you to quickly update the plugins.

hudson-security.xml is for 3.x. It will be automatically created from old settings.

Thanks Prakash.

I have one more question. How do we take ThreadDumps in Hudson . I have tried this way which I got from one doc http://yourserver/hudson/threadDump

But it didnt work.

Actually what happened was ,

The job was stuck while checking out from Subversion and I tried to abort and it was not happening. So read in one doc says we need to see the Thread Dumps to check further where exactly the stuck is . Please let me know what is the action should be taken care in these scenarios .

That is the right way. For example to take thread Dump from

http://ci.hudson-ci.org

I issue the command

http://ci.hudson-ci.org/threadDump

What is the exact error you get?

Hi Prakash,

I am not getting an error. I am not understanding which date's threadDump it is showing up .

I am getting one thread as below. But how do we take action on this ? Is there any way we can kill the build process in the backend from unix server? If in case abort option is not working because of stuck somewhere . is there any option to kill only that build in the back end?

This is not the right stack. If you are on linux, you may be able to see the process tree using the command "ps axf" or "pstree" and determine which process is stuck.

Hi , For 3.1.2 version, is the web server mandatory? In our system, Hudson is running stand alone. its not in any of the container. Please let us is it mandatory to be in Apache tomcat from 3.1.2 version.Current version we are using is 2.2.1. Up-gradation failed with 500 error while login after up-gradation.

No, it is same as 2.2.1, you can use java -jar hudson.war to run 3.1.2.

If you get 500 error look at the log file (if you used apache, then catalina.log) and see if you find any error related to login. What kind of Authentication and Authorization scheme are you using?

Ah I see. The issue is because of Favorite Column plugin.

ava.lang.NoSuchMethodError: hudson.model.Hudson.getAuthentication()Lorg/acegisecurity/Authentication;
at hudson.plugins.favorite.column.FavoriteColumn.isLoggedIn(FavoriteColumn.java:59)

Disable that plugin for now. Go to Hudson_Home/plugins and remove favorite.hpi and the favorite folder and restart Hudson.

We are preparing to release newer version of favorite column plugin for Hudson 3.2.0

Hudson 3.2.0 will be released in June.

BTW, if you are looking for favorite plugin fix we discussed above, then the latest version 1.10-h-1 in the Plugin Center already has the fix.

Hello,
Recently we have upgraded Hudson from 2.1.0 to 3.1.2, After up-gradation we face serious performance issue with hudson, hence we revert back to old version again.
Machine detail.
Machine type : VM (Vmware)
CPU = 1 Vcpu (Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5690 @ 3.47GHz)
MemTotal: 6228844 KB
SwapTotal: 8393920 kB

it is deployed on apache tomcat 7.1,

could anyone point what could be the real cause of performance issue.
Please do let me know if more information required

Until Hudson 3.1.0 one of the major issue was memory consumption. For large installations (hundreds of jobs and tens of thousands of builds), huge memory was required. Even then Hudson has to be rebooted often to dump the accumulated memory. In large enterprises, rebooting often is not an option. Long uptime of Hudson in order of months is desirable. In Hudson 3.1.0 we introduced caching mechanism to retain only currently accessed jobs and builds and periodically release the memory.

One trade off is, this could introduce latency (page load), if Hudson was idle for a long time. Since all the data is released and memory is reclaimed. There are API to iterate over all jobs and builds and some of the plugins uses them (such as diskspace). This is the cause of the latency, since all jobs and builds need to be loaded from disk (especially slow if master is on a windows machine). We have introduced other APIs the plugins could use to reduce latency. We fixed in few plugins and keep fixing in others.

So a list of plugins you are using may be helpful for us to identify possible cause of latency.

Also, it helps to retain limited amount of builds in each job, by configuring the jobs to delete old builds.

Hello Winston,
Thanks for detail information.
once last question is, if i increase the RAM will it solve the issue.
in 3.2 release is these issues will be resolved.
As slow loading of page give user impression that application is running slow.

The main Hudson-on-Hudson is running 3.1.2 (http://ci.hudson-ci.org). No noticeable delay is seen. The main reason is the jobs retains only last 50 or so jobs.

Increasing memory does not solve the problem. Main purpose of caching is not to keep all data in the memory. We put some fixes to improve latency in 3.2.0

You can contact me off-line at winston dot prakash at gmail dot com and give details about your settings, espcially the plugins you are using

We have filed approval request with Eclipse PMC to allow the release of Hudson 3.2.0. If approved we are planning to release it around Aug 15th.

This looks like a security permission issue. What security setting do you have? What did you try to access?
