I want to change the background color of all lines which contain
certain regular expressions in my xml editor.

How can I do this (maybe over LineStyleProviders)?

I'm afraid there's just no way to do that at the moment, but you
might be able to do so by creating your own JFace text annotations
in 3.0 M7 and decorating them with a background color.
