Opening old UML diagrams? [message #1021085] Tue, 19 March 2013 09:58 Go to next message

I have some UML diagrams that were created using the old "uml2tools" editors (http://www.eclipse.org/modeling/mdt/?project=uml2tools.) After an OS upgrade that also, included a reinstall of Eclipse I'm no longer able to work with those. I seem unable to install the "old" tools, and adding "Papyrus UML" didn't really help, either - if I double-click on the files they are just displayed in a plain-text format, and I have yet to find a suitable editor via Open With->Other...

Does anyone know I way I can work with my old diagrams? Is Papyrus supposed to understand "legacy" formats, anyway?

I have several different types of files/diagrams - among the file extensions are "umlcomp", "umlclass" and "umlstm". I've installed version 0.7.3.v201104270854 of various "MDT Papyrus" editors on Eclipse Helios. I know it's old, but it's what's bundled with my Linux distro, and not having to maintain the entire Eclipse setup "on the side" would be rather convenient...

Hi,

uml2tools and Papyrus are two different tools, and each of them support its own format. The only thing you can reuse is the *.uml file, which contain the semantic model (i.e. no graphical information on the diagrams and layout). As far as I know, there is no migration tool between uml2tools and Papyrus. However, you may still find a uml2tools release somewhere... although I don't know where you should look to find it.

Regards,
Camille

Hi

Unfortunately no UML2 Tools developers were available to accommodate the
MDT/UML2 migration from 3.x to 4.x that introduced UML 2.4.1 support,
consequently UML2 Tools is not installable unless you also use a
pre-Juno version of MDT/UML2.

One day the tools may support UMLDI. There is a common GMF Notation
influence so diagram transformation may not be totally impopssibl;e, but
I doubt that it's easy.

So, simply put, if you have used Eclipse to create UML diagrams, then upgraded the software, you have to recreate everything more or less from scratch? Pretty disappointing Sad

I did test that option briefly. To me it seemed unnecessarily cumbersome to use in that there is no way to just translate the model into a diagram - you have to add each and every item via drag and drop. Or have I missed something?

Also, I couldn't find a way to create a component diagram, which is in many ways what I'm most interested in. Isn't this supported?

Thanks,

- Toralf
