Internationalized characters not displaying properly [message #983167]

I seem to be having a problem displaying i18ned characters in a PDF generated from BIRT, specifically the umlaut. The German word is not coming from a translation file, but from user input so I'm not sure I can escape the unicode character. Has anyone else run into this problem, and can anyone give me some direction?

I'm using Helios with BIRT 3.2.20
