Hi,

We are currently searching for some kind of managing environment for our
server–side equinox applications. I think that p2 will definitely have
some kind of the features we are searching for, but there is a lack of
documentation for the p2 system and so it is hard to get started.

First, let me explain our requirements for this "managing environment" and
maybe some guys form the p2 team can give feedback.

1. We need to do the basic OSGI operations like install, update, etc for a
complete application, not only on plug-in or bundle base. (Maybe on
feature base because for building and deploying the applications we
already have feature definitions)
2. Manage multiple equinox versions (3,3; 3.4; . . )
3. Manage multiple applications and plug-ins to have different versions
available at the same time.
4. Start a new instance by choosing the desired equinox version and the
application. This new instance should run in an own java-vm.
5. Monitor the started applications and have some kind of watchdog if
something went wrong.

Some additional comments:
-> These applications are server-side applications.
-> With server-side we do not mean http server or running these applications
inside an http container.

I think the p2 team has a good overview of the system and can give us some
hints what will be done by the p2 and how this can be realized.

Best Regards,
Michael
