Windows 8 Support [message #775827] |

I know Windows 8 only has a developer preview build (Build 8102) currently
available and that a Beta version will not even be available until February
2012. However, do we have any early thoughts what, if any, impact Windows 8
might have with respect to SWT and SWT based applications?
If I remember correctly there were some specific efforts that had to be made
in order to make SWT officially support Vista/Windows7 when those releases
came out. Is it too early to start getting a handle on what kind of effort
it will take to get SWT to officially support Windows8.

Most major OS releases necessitate making changes in SWT to adapt to
changes in the platform. The number of required changes for Windows
releases are usually not high (MS is relatively good about maintaining
API behavior), but it's too early to know in detail what will be needed
to adapt to Windows 8. We anticipate that it will be on a similar scale
to what was needed for Vista and Windows 7.
The plan is to make the changes that are required for swt apps to
continue to run in Windows 8's non-Metro mode (I'm not sure what their
name for this is). There is not currently a plan to make swt apps run
in their Metro interface.
