Hi all,

I have problems connecting to updates repositories from eclipse (Linux Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit, Eclipse 3.7.1, Java 1.6.0).

Trying to connect to http:/ /download.eclipse.org/releases/indigo gives this log:

Quote:

Unable to read repository at http:/ /download.eclipse.org/releases/indigo/content.xml.
Unable to read repository at http:/ /download.eclipse.org/releases/indigo/content.xml.
Connection reset

Connecting to http:/ /download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/3.7, 3.6, etc. gives similar results. (The "space" in links is on purpose, I can't post here links)
But connection to projects repositories like Mylin or ADT works fine.

I tried several solutions, none soleved my problem:
- Switched to official Sun JDK (1.6.0_25)
- Downloaded eclipse instead of using Ubuntu repository
- Defined in ini file "-Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true" flag
- deleted cache folder
- Do not use proxy
- It's not a transport/firewall/antivirus problem

From what I see in "wireshark", eclipse tries to retrieve "content.xml" from the update repositories, this file isn't there and it gives up. For some strange reason it does not try to download the right file - compositeContent.jar.
I found a similar bug occurred only on 64 bit systems, but it was almost a year ago and it appears fixed.

Please help!

Eclipse version:

I tried several solutions, none solved my problem:
- Downloaded and Install eclipse new
- Defined in ini file "-Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true" flag
- Deleted cache folder
- Do not use any proxy
- Shutdown Firewall/AntiVirus

I hope somebody can help me.
Thanks a lot.

I'm having a similar problem as Shaul - "Unable to connect to repository....", except the error message ends "Connection refused" instead of reset....

I've downloaded Eclipse 4.1.1, now trying to do Help > Install New Software, and get that error for all the locations.

Note - this is following instructions that have worked fine in the past, latest time being in early December 2011.

I'm on Linux. I do have a proxy set up (and that should be working; our IT staff isn't around today to verify that, but I don't know of any reason why it should not be working Smile ).

Paul

After a long investigation it do appears to be some very strange transport (more accurate to say IT security of our LAN) problem, that appears only on Linux 64bit. Fixed.

Thanks, Shaul. I'm using 32-bit so that wouldn't apply....

Also, I should add that I've read and tried everything in this thread so far, with no success.

UPDATE: Problem solved here as well. It was also a setup issue on my end, specifically needed to use Port 80. (Not sure how 25 got in the mix.... doh!)

Adding -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true to the end of the eclipse.ini file worked great Smile
The -vmargs parameter was already there.
Thanks!!!

Hi Paul,
I know it's been over a year since this post but I think I'm having the same problem as you. I'm getting 'Connection refused' rather than 'Connection reset' in my error log. If you can remember this far back, are you able to expand on how you fixed this?

Cheers,
Cameron

Hi, Cameron,

Yes, the key in my case was checking the port and proxy settings under Window / Preferences / General / Network Connections. I had to correct from a wrong port (25; still don't know how that got entered to begin with) to a usable port (80). Specifically, you need to make sure that whatever outgoing port(s) your organization allows, you're using one of those, and enter the settings for any proxy your organization requires.

Regards,
Paul

Hi, I'm having this issue with Eclipse Mars. I've worked from the same place with Juno, Kepler, Luna, and suddenly Mars doesn't update/install new software.
Everything in the "Network Connections" window is the same, I've tried every fix from this page but nothing seems to solve this. We are not running any proxy.

Would appreciate a lot if someone could help me.

Is there an error message in a dialog or in the Error Log view?

Cheers

I've tried to add Eclipse in exceptions rules in the firewall and even to cut it. Funny thing is that I tried to update my Eclipse installation from Luna to Mars, everything went smoothly but when I tried to update I received same error.

I tried to use the new Eclipse installer which gave me this error below:

Of course I tried to modify my eclipse.ini as suggested here, adding the 80 port to the update sites etc.

Thank you for your concerns Eike and for you immense work on EMF.

Hi Aleksander,

I really tried hard to develop a theory for your problem, but I must admit that I can't find any indications for a
software defect. That doesn't mean there aren't any. I looked especially carefully because of
http://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=470900 but that's really not about "Connection reset". To be 100% sure,
please delete your ${user.home}/.eclipse/org.eclipse.oomph.p2/cache folder. Again, I would bet that it doesn't address
your problem. But then I'd have no better theory than network-level issues on your end.

Cheers
/Eike

Can you connect to internet at all through Eclipse?

Open the internal webbrowser. In Eclipse: Window -> show view -> Other -> General: Internal web browser.
Look up any normal adress, is it working?
Can you connect to another update site? Try for example Eclipse Emma: http://update.eclemma.org/ Do you see anything there?

What are your proxy preferences? Go to Window -> preferences -> General: Network connections.

The active provider:

Specifies the settings profile to be used when opening connections. Choosing the Direct provider causes all the connections to be opened without the use of a proxy server. Selecting Manual causes settings defined in Eclipse to be used. On some platforms there is also a Native provider available, selecting this one causes settings that were discovered in the OS to be used.
If internet is working fine outside of Eclipse, try changing to Native. After that, try Direct.

I have encountered problems where an update site would not load, then I had to remove it and add it again. This forces Eclipse to reread the contents of the site even if it has a cached copy. So, if you still get no connection to the indigo update site, but everything else is working, try that. Go to Window -> Preferences -> Install/update: Available Software sites. Then remove and add the indigo site. Just remember to copy the adress so you can add it again.

As suggested in a comment below by @lostiniceland, this is a simpler way to achieve the above:

Goto Preferences -> Install Update -> Available Software Sites => select the entry and click the "Reload" button to the right. This is sometimes also helpful when you have a local updatesite for testing custom plugins
