BUP component

Meeting Notes (February 8, 2006)

Participants:
Steve Adolph, University of British Columbia / WSA Consulting, Inc.
Brian G. Lyons, Number Six Software, Inc.
Jim Ruehlin, IBM
Kurt Sand, Telelogic
Chris Sibbald, Telelogic
Sigurd Hopen, 2ProMentor
Ricardo Balduino, IBM
Bruce MacIsaac, IBM
Jason Mansell, ESI
Aitor Bediaga, ESI

Membership and Participation Logistics:

We discussed the issues of Eclipse Membership and how various parties will participate in the BUP component.  Though not a proper authority, Ricardo Balduino was identified as the one with the most knowledge of the issues of participating as a contributor to Eclipse.

We identified organizations in the process of becoming official committers:

- Number Six Software, Inc. (Brian G. Lyons)
- Covansys (Kirti Vaidya)
- University BC (Steve Adolph)
- Telelogic (Kurt Sand)
- BearingPoint (Brian Haughton)
- 2-Pro Mentor (Sigurd Hopen)
- CapGemini (tbd)
- European Software Institute (Asier Azaceta)

Ricardo and Brian Lyons will chase down who the Eclipse Foundation has in the pipeline for committer status.  We’ll also try to get an idea of expected duration for the process.

Naming:
The following list of names were discussed and considered:

- Basic Unified Process

- Team Unified Process

(There was a concern that the company Team Technologies, Inc.) already has a TeamUP-SDP trademarked.

- Open Unified Process

- Reeti (Hindi for ‘a way of doing’)

- Shea-Lee (Mandarin for collaboration/teamwork)

(Though we were intending to close the look on this quickly, we found that there are a number of Eclipse rules that still have to be better understood before we could close the loop on this.)

Outreach:
We discussed outreach to get it on everyone’s radar.  In a future meeting, Naveena Bereny of IBM will participate and assist with this push.

Here are some notes on formal conferences:

- Telelogic has support for EclipseCon.  They will have EPF messaging at their booth.

- Telelogic will also have a press release on its participation in this project with insight into what it is and why it is a good thing.

- IBM is also sponsoring EclipseCon.  Ricardo had a submission accepted for 10minute talk.

- Abstracts for SD Best Practices are due by March 3.

- Number Six will have a booth at the Rational Software Development Confernece with EPF/BUP messaging.  Brian Lyons submitted an abstract for a presentation that will mention BUP off-hand if accepted.

Here are some notes on informal conferences:

- Every town will have various local user groups (IEEE, agile, Rational, SPIN, etc.).  We should push on that.

Special Interest Groups:

Availability:

The code and existing content has been uploaded to CVS!

Next Steps:
In the next two weeks, the special interest groups will identify what they have in their area, where it is in a lifecycle toward completion, and what is missing.

We need to create a start of a presentation for this content so that we all have a consistent starting point as we give presentations on it.
