A tribute (and a final hiho) to Brian Lyons

We are deeply saddened that Brian Lyons passed away on Labor Day (Sep 3) in a motorcycle accident. Brian has spent his life building communities and organizations that help us develop better software. One of these communities was EPF. He was one of the first people we talked to seek advice as we were planning to launch the project, and as component lead for OpenUP, he was one of the key leaders in the EPF project. His advice was always sought after, and his energy kept us going. Humor was his trademark, and he embodied why people are attracted to open source projects: the ability to interact with other bright people in a fun and inspiring environment.

Brian was co-founder, CEO and CTO of Number Six Software, and co-author of UML 2 Toolkit. He is survived by his wife, Tamara, and his son Asher Francis. Our prayers are with him and his family in this difficult time.

For those that would like to give back, just as Brian gave to this community, his family has requested that donations be made to the Brian Lyons Scholarship Fund at the University of Maryland, his Alma Mater.

Checks should be made payable to:
University of Maryland College Park Foundation.
The memo portion of the check should indicate: Brian Lyons Scholarship

Checks should be mailed to:
