Experience with eclipse after successful project [message #239646]

This isn't a question... more of a viewpoint.

I recently finished developing a program in jave for my dissertation for
the final year of my software engineering degree (finishing in a few
weeks! woohoo!)

I developed the application using Eclipse 3.0M8 on Windows XP using the
Java SDK version 1.4.2_04

I found eclipse by accident because I felt that JBuilder 9 which I had
been using previously was to heavy (taking far too many resources!).

After successfuly developing an application with eclipse I feel I can
safely say that eclipse is the best Java IDE available bar none.

I used eclipse 2.1.3 originally before deciding to switch to development
release 3.0M8.

So far I have not had any problems with the new (what you might call
cartoon) interface. I develop my application using Swing so I dont have
any involvement in the Eclipse SWT.

I dont like the new cursor in eclipse 3.0M8... that is the funny square
bracket shaped thing. I know it can be changed if you switch mode but
ideally i preferred using the smart mode with a standard cursor.

Anyway.

Thats it. What i've said wont really help anyone (think i'm just pleased
i've finished my last project for my degree ever!)

On another note i wondered how many of you know about Visual Paradigm.
It is a UML, CASE tool plugin for eclipse (amongst others). I used it in
my project and found it rather good. The community edition is free but
you have to pay for the commercial versions. Anyway i'm not plugging it,
just found it interesting. You can get it here.

You should read the follow-ups to your own postings. Tom Eicher wrote there:

| the caret (cursor: mouse cursor, caret: text caret) for smart insert
| mode has been changed back to the normal shape. The caret for "raw"
| insert mode is different now.

Thanks for that. I hadn't actually seen that post. I recently changed to
a different news client and its doesn't display messages in a hierarchy
so it difficult to see follow ups. Especially as i sometimes dont read
the messages for a few days.

Great that its been changed back.
