Hi,

I am a newby to eclipse and was triggered by an article in a German
magazine. Downloaded the installation "eclipse-platform-3.0M6-win32.zip" and
"eclipse-SDK-3.0M6-win32.zip" and unziped them to d:\eclipse. I already had
a working java 1.4.2 on my system downloaded from Sun as "Sun ONE studio 4
CE".
When going through the FAQ the first thing I wanted to do was get a simple
"hello world java" programme running to learn how eclipse works. It went
wrong immediately in the beginning. When selecting the menu
file->new->project a window with 2 panes appear with in the left side only a
folder called "simple" is available and on the right side the word "Project
with a wand is visible. Probably I did something wrong with the installation
or have not configured Java in the right way. I could not select a java type
of project.
What went wrong?

regards

Robert Los

You probably used the wrong download of eclipse. You want the
"eclipse-SDK-3.0M6-win32.zip" version
Once you have unzipped that into a new directory and started it there
are two things you can do:
1) open the Java Perspective (click on the little window icon with a
plus superimposed on it on the left side of the screen, or select
"Window->Open Perspective->Java" from the menu) Then with the Java
perspective open, click on the new project icon (on the top beside the
new package and new class icons)

2) Go to File->new->project on the menu. It will open up a dialog that
will let you select a project type. You should see 3 different project
types: 1) Java, 2) Plugin development, 3) Simple. Choose the Java
project. If you don't see the three options you have downloaded the
wrong zip file from eclipse.org

Hope this helps,
Dave

Dear David,

I did download the right file "eclipse-SDK-3.0M6-win32.zip". Deleting the
'eclipse' directory and unpacking the zip file again solved the problem.
When i originally installed eclipse I had already a working sun-step one
java environment. When eclipse did not start properly I deleted this SUN
environment and all other related java things, downloaded java sdk again
from the sun website and reinstalled eclipse.

thanks
