It would be nice to be able to select a custom icon for validation markers.

When using validation markers in the diagram editor, we had some issues during usability testing. Since the icon used is an "X", users sometimes think it serves as a delete button. So they click on it and see a validation error (e.g. Id must be nonempty) and think that "The node cannot be deleted because it has no Id" Smile

And BTW, should I create any other potential feature requests here or in Bugzilla?

Enhancement requests should go in bugzilla, but before we go that route, I'd experiment with other placements. I think one of the reasons for confusion is placement in the upper right corner, where it triggers the association with close-window and close-tab actions. I typically place the validation marker on the left instead, as it's more common for people to see an error marker to the left of the item or message. You can also try an overlay over your image. That shouldn't trigger any wrong associations. I believe there is an example of creating an overlay in the samples.

Another setting you can twick is the validation maker size. Choosing a "small" size may distinguish it more from the Delete button.
