Please do not point me to the Eclipsecon slides they are not very helpful.

Ross,

You can look at the org.eclipse.ui.navigator.resources plugin that ships
with the SDK. It defines the Project Explorer view and it's associated
content. In the SDK, the view hosts Resource and Java content.
