Differences between "clean" run parameter and "clear configuration area" [message #287251] Tue, 28 June 2005 05:11

Hello Eclipse community,

I heard in several discussions that the "-clean" program argument
should have the same effect as the run configuration option
"clear the configuration area before launching" on the configuration
tab. Is that really true?

Indeed I observed some differences between these two flags: It seems
as if "clear the configuration area before launching" is more strict
than the "-clean" program argument itself. E.g. the last one does
**not** clear the history directory of the org.eclipse.update
subdirectory of the configuration dir. Also the .lock file is not
touched as well as the .fileTable.18 and the .fileTableLock files from
the org.eclipse.core.runtime/.manager/ directory.

Are these differences by design? or is it an oversight of -clear?
These differences seem to imply that Eclipse RCP's are not able to
completely clean their configuration area via program parameters.

Thanks for any insight,

Daniel Krügler
