Auto-generation of serialVersionUID? [message #260862] Sun, 13 July 2008 07:07 Go to next message

I have scanned the help and can't see how to automatically generate a
serialVersionUID in Serializable classes using Eclipse Europa.

Is it possible? I know I can turn the warning off but I really do want to
be able to add in the serialVersionUID to some classes.

If you click on the little light bulb in the left margin by the warning
message, you're presented with a set of choices to correct the problem,
which includes generating one. You can also configure Source->Source
Cleanup... to do this for all selected files so that you don't have to
do it one-by-one for each warning.

Thanks Ed for the quick reply. That's a great tip but why isn't it
mentioned in the help? Or perhaps it is but it hasn't been indexed
properly.

The help isn't always as helpful as it might be. It's often done last
and developers aren't always the best people to be writing help
documentation. And of course, sometimes even if the information is
there, it's hard to find it... I must admit that I personally almost
never look at help. I expect things to be self evident. :-P

Feel free to submit a Bugzilla report, preferably including a patch.
Resources for writing and editing help are very limited, and assistance is
always appreciated. Thanks!
