I have a GEF based workflow editor. Is it possible to create a GMF based
editor using the core models, edit-parts and edit-part factory from GEF?
Basically, I would like to retain the granular customizations done in the
GEF controllers. The customizations include representing a tree-model on an
XY layout, allow drop only onto a certain edit-part on the viewer etc.

Hello,
It would be convenient to complete the graph model, and mapping model, and
then customize the generated editparts and editpolicies rather than change
the names and options in the genmodel before generating the diagram editor
code!

You'll notice there are a lot more features inherent with GMF that would
enhance your editor. As GMF wraps the GEF editparts and editpolicies, the
customizations could be traced similarly to how you did so for your GEF
editor. For a better understanding download the source code, so that you're
aware of the abstraction
