I'm having a real bad time passing arguments to external processes if
the argument contains an equals. I've tried escaping and enclosing with
quotes in every imaginable combination. If I don't do anything, the
equals signs disappear. If I enclose the entire argument string in
quotes, it's processed as a single argument by the external process. Is
