Strange Problem! [message #251103] Sun, 09 March 2008 08:32 Go to next message
Eclipse UserFriend
Dear firends,

I have unzipped the eclipse 3.3, but when I run it, after specifying the
workspace, eclipse is exited and a file is created showing the error
message. The error message is at the end of this email. I think my
computer has hardware falut and it seems that my RAM is damagaged. Am I
right?

Thanks,
Arman

Arman,

Did you install it in a new location rather than over top of an old
install? Have you tried starting it with an empty/new workspace? It
looks like it's trying to restore the state of an older workspace, so
perhaps if you opened the workspace with your older version of Eclipse,
closed all the editors, and turned to a different perspective before
exiting again, you might be able to avoid whatever is causing this
strange problem.

Dear Merks

Thank you for your reply. I want to explain more about this problem:
Actually, it had worked correctly a few months ago. After istalling STP
plugins and working with it, suddenly STP plugin didn't work. I decided to
change the workspace, but it was not possible to change the default
workspace because the mentioned error file was created and Eclipse exited.
Therefore, I decided to install again eclipse by unzipping the zip file in
a new path, but it didn't work again! Even, I installed windows again and
formatted the drive C. The strange point is that after installing the
Windows, eclipse didn't work at all even in the default workspace!!!

Thankd for your help,
Arman

Arman,

A JVM should never crash, no matter how bad the code it's running. So
my sense is that it might be a JRE bug and that using a different JRE
might avoid the problem. If I knew where in the workspace the
information about the active perspective and the state of the views was
stored, it's probably possible to delete that. Does it work to start
with a brand new workspace? If that works, you can always import
existing projects from the old workspace into the new workspace...

Ed, from the stack trace, I think in this case the JVM is not "crashing";
there's a GPF in native code that was called from SWT. The JVM is reporting
the failure and shutting down. Not that it makes much difference in the
long run :-)

If I understand Arman's history:

1. originally everything worked.

2. He installed STP, and everything was still working.

3. "Suddenly" (we don't know why or when), things stopped working.

4. After that, nothing helped: reformatting the drive, reinstalling Windows,
reinstalling Eclipse from the same archive.

Personally, my surmise is that something (a virus?) has corrupted the
Windows install, and that something survived the reformat and reinstall. As
for how it could have survived: clearly Arman had to install other things
too, along with Windows, or else he wouldn't be able to re-try Eclipse; I
surmise that one of those "other things" is corrupted or infected.

To my mind, step 3 is the interesting one. What happened to "suddenly" make
the browser stop working under Eclipse?

It is also certainly possible, as Arman guessed in his first post, that
there is a hardware problem here: an unseated or damaged memory module, for
instance. However, I'd think that would cause failures more random than
this.
