Customizing perspectives is too tedious, time-consuming [message #247365] Thu, 31 January 2008 17:04 Go to next message

The Window > Open perspective menu comes up with only a few options, plus
"other". (Right now I have "debug", "java", "resource", and "other".) Very
often I want to get to a perspective that's not in the immediate options,
such as Java EE or Subversion browsing. I have to select "other" which
opens a dialog where I can select from the rest of the perspectives. That
gets really frustrating when you have to do it 50 times a day.

According to the docs, the remedy is to go to Window > Customize
Perspective and wrangle with the dialog that comes up. After you
"customize perspective" you have to "save perspective" which takes you
through a sequence of two more dialogs. That entire operation has to be
done for every single perspective that I use regularly.

Also, all of the above applies to views as well as perspectives.

Is there any way to reduce this incredible amount of extra clicking and
opening and saving? Is there a config file somewhere or a preferences
setting? Under preferences I found the option to set the default
perspective, but that's all. I looked in the Eclipse help but didn't find
an answer to this question.

Thanks,

jm

JM,

You know that once you've opened the perspective that their little icons
shows on the tab to the right of the open button and that you can easily
click on that icon to switch between them, right? You can also make
that tab wider to show more of the choices at once. Are you really
customizing perspectives all the time? It's not clear why. I wonder
if File-Export Preferences exports these customizations? It doesn't
sound like your using new installs all the time though. I'm a bit
confused...

I didn't know that. Thank you, that's the solution. Yes, I was customizing
perspectives all the time because I didn't realize how those icons work. I
was in the habit of using the Window > Open Perspective menu, which
performs the same basic function, but operates completely differently.

Thanks,

jm

Hi Jim. Just so you know, as part of customizing perspectives, you can
also customize what shows on the first Open Perspective menu. Also, you
can easily assign a keyboard shortcut to open a perspective.

If you're interested in learning more about the Eclipse workbench nuts
and bolts, there is a new video tutorial available that covers this
stuff (http://eclipsetutorial.sourceforge.net/workbench.html). HTH. Mark

JM also, if you are using Eclipse 3.3, then you have the new keyboard
shortcut CTRL-3 that will allow you to quickly get to any view or
perspective just by typing it's name.
