I was reading the newspaper this morning and it is written that IBM is
currently looking to acquire Sun.
My question are:
Do you think that only one IDE will remain available (e.g. Netbeans versus
Eclipse ) ?
Will IBM sponsor Eclipse or Netbeans ?
It would be important that the Eclipse Foundation invest in showing how
Eclipse is a profitable platform for software vendor and integrators and
not just intend to promote so many none strategic open source projects.
If it happens Omondo will immediately publish a detailed feature chart
between Netbeans and Eclipse modeling tools. On the modeling market we are
a lot better but on the Jee and Database integration we are in direct
competition. It would be interesting that other corporations specialized
into Jee or Database or other fields explain why they have invested into
Eclipse and why is better that Netbeans.
If IBM select Netbeans then it could be the end of Eclipse, so we need to
be careful and explain every day more why Eclipse is better.
btw, the decision will be taken before the beginning or during the
EclipseCon and I expect an immediate reaction of the foundation after this
possible acquisition.

Hi Mike,
It seems that the most logical option would be a merge of Netbeans within
Eclipse. I think that Netbeans should therefore join the Eclipse
Foundation and that all the entire Java community should finally be united.
I know this is a long process and I hope this Java community demand will
be considered at management levels.

Vlad,
Thank you for your insightful comments.
I am sure that IBM and the many other companies participating at Eclipse
will make their decisions based on what is best for their businesses, the
projects and the open source community.
On a related note, the Eclipse Foundation does not comment on the business
strategies of any of its members. There have been many acquisitions in the
technology marketplace over the past five years. I don't see why we would
treat this one any differently. So if IBM should acquire Sun there will not
be any "reaction" from Eclipse Foundation.
