Are there alternatives to built in console? [message #181865] Mon, 27 November 2006 15:05 Go to next message

Hi everyone.

I like Eclipse but i hate it's built in console. I don't like the look and
feel of it and I would prefer something more like the command line of
Windows or like Konsole under KDE.

I am currently running Eclipse under Linux but i can not find a way to
change the appearance an behavior of the built in console.

Is there any way to change it's behavior, or to run my CLI program under
some other terminal emulator application? Some plugin maybe?

I tried googling but couldn't find anything.

There are a few configurable items under Run/Debug in the Preferences.
But honestly, it is just a simple view for displaying standard output
and entering standard input - I don't see much room for improvement.
What specific features or appearance are you looking for? If we can't
help you configure it the way you want, you can enter specific
enhancement requests into Bugzilla at http://bugs.eclipse.org

Hope this helps,
Eric

Thank you for your response Eric. I wasn't aware of that entry and I will
try to configure the console with these options. At first glance there seems
to be very few of them but i will try to dig further.

Mostly there are two things that I would like my console to have

1. The cursor should be always on, maybe blinking only when the console
window is the active view. Also I would like it to be stable. Now, when i
have multiple lines of output, the cursor blinks anywhere I click. It goes
back where it should be when I type, but I still don't like it.

2. As for cosmetic enhancements, I prefer consoles black with white or green
letters. And maybe ability to use a different font would be nice.

For fonts you want Window -> Preferences -> General -> Appearance ->
Colors and Fonts. Then just type 'console' in the filter and set those.
Of course, as you can see, it is not a global change (since you have to
set it for both 'Debug' and CVS'), but is a workaround per se (not a
'full solution' if you were hoping for a global setting).

Rem
