linux shortcuts on windows: How? [message #181302] Wed, 22 November 2006 10:08 Go to next message

Hi everybody!

Im using eclipse SDK Version: 3.2.0 Build id: M20060629-1905 on Debian
Linux and on Windows XP. Almost everything works fine.

One thing that is annoying is that eclipse on Linux and Windows is using
different shortcuts and mouse functions. For example, on Linux I can cut
and paste the Emacs style, while on Windows I have to use the keyboard.

How can I have my well known Linux keybindings and mouse-(how it is
called?) on Windows eclipse?

Thank you,

Ulrich

Change you key bindings to Emacs style.

Set the scheme to "Emacs"

Of course, this statement is imprecise. You can use the mouse on Windows,
too. And you can set your own shortcuts (although I don't know yet how
you can customize the mouse. Is that possible?)

What I'd like is (a) to have my windows eclispe behave as similar to my
linux one as possible and (b) to make this happen as easy as possible.

Thanks for any help

Ulrich

thanks for your answer.

Yes, I know of that and I should have said it. the scheme "Emacs" does
good things - like being able to save with <ctrl>-c <ctrl>-s.

But I'm referring to the difference between linux and windows here (I use
the scheme "Emacs" on both platforms)

Ulrich, would I be right in guessing that (in MS Windows) you want to be
able to select text and then paste it using the 3rd mouse button, without
having to accompany this with a keystroke?

If so, then I think your request is "I want copy and paste to work the
same way in MS Windows as it does in X-Windows". If I am understanding
correctly, then Emacs (and Eclipse) has nothing to do with this.
Unfortunately the answer is no, this is an OS-dependent system for copying
and pasting.

You could always try googling for words like "x11 copy paste windows xp"
and see if anyone has a little app that enables this as it doesn't sound
like it would be impossible to simply monitor selected text and bind the
middle mouse button to paste.

I realize this is slightly off-topic for the thread, but I simply don't
understand why anyone would want to use a key shortcut scheme that
causes you to do silly things like that, when the default Ctrl+s is
half-the keystrokes. Are people really so stuck on what they already
know that they hesitate to learn something new?

Picked up a Dvorak keyboard lately? Or still stuck using the QWERTY
keyboard designed to *slow* typing?

Yes, us poor humans *are* creatures of habit.

(This is really Off Topic btw, sorry)

Actually I use a DVORAK and am also a hardened EMacs user... [it's C-x C-s
by the way, not C-c C-s ;-)] and I'd argue that the ease of use of Emacs
style bindings in Eclipse are simply for those of us who do some commands
subconsciously, not because they are in any way faster to type. Most Emacs
commands are not efficient at all; us poor sods are just used to them.

Thank you for your advise. I tried http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/nt/TXMouse
and it works.
