Is there a way to define variable that are workspace dependent ?

I've several workspace to allow working with different branch (source
control) of the main application. We use some variable to specify some
paths.
The problem is that a variable defined in eclipse
(window/preference/java/build Path/class path variables) are use by the
platform and must be changed every time I swith workspace.

Is there a way to define them in the workspace configuration instead of
eclipse main configuration

material:
windows XP
Eclipse 3.1M2
JDK 1.5 to run eclipse
JDK1.4.2 to run applicarion

Thanks.
