Hi! I'm trying to install Eclipse w/C++ on my Linux machine. I have the
tarball, but what root directory do I extract to? I want Eclipse to be
available to all users on the Linux box, so I don't want to put it under
my local home directory, but Linux won't let me put it under any of the
shared directories like usr or etc even as administrator.

Where do you put this thing as a global resource?

Doug,

The convention for installing third party software on Linux systems is
to install it into either the /usr/local directory or the /opt
directory. But that's just a convention, it's odd that you weren't able
to extract to /usr or /etc (which is a bad idea) as administrator. You
probably should look into that.

Hope this hepls,
- Jeff
