Old Fogie possibly converting to Eclipse [message #151616] Thu, 11 May 2006 09:55 Go to next message

I've been programming for 20+ years. I've used GNU emacs since it was first
released and I use other tools like cscope to help me navigate code. I have
my emacs set up so I can do cscope searches inside of emacs.

Part of Eclipse and other IDE's interest me but most of the others force you
to use their GUI editors. Thats o.k. but it scares me a little. There is
also just the learning curve aspect. Teaching my fingers to do the Eclipse
thing rather then their trained emacs thing.

So, I am hoping someone can comment on their similar experience as mine would
be. I would like to hear from someone that has used emacs, make, cscope "all
their life" and made the transition to Eclipse. Has it been worth it? What
benefits did you gain from the switch? etc.

Thank you,
Perry Smith

Did you know there was an emacs plugin for Eclipse?

Tom Tromey's recent "Confessions of an Eclipse convert" start out with
the following sentence:

"As a long-time Emacs user, and a typical command-line-oriented UNIX
person, I was skeptical when I first heard about Eclipse [...]".

Here's the full read, which covers the most important tasks and also
comes up with a wish list:

Happy eclipsing

Thanks again. I should have mentioned, I'm doing C/C++. Mostly I do device
drivers. I'm trying to do the first C++ device driver for AIX.

I've downloaded Eclipse for Mac and AIX. I'm going to look at the C/C++
project and try it. Then try and add in my current project to Eclipse and
see how it goes.
