Birt output format [message #151356] Thu, 06 April 2006 05:05 Go to next message

Hi,

I'm searching for other BIRT output formats than PDF and HTML, especially
Microsoft Word one.

Have some plugins been developped? Does a BIRT equivalent exists for this
feature? Can you direct me on another project if BIRT definitively can't
implement this feature?

Thank you for your help!

Thanks for the rapid answer!

It's possible with BIRT? I found nothing on it but I will continue
searching.

But I'm especially interessed in Word export, which is needed for my
project.

If someone has an indication...

thx

I'm sorry but in BIRT I can only view my report in PDF or WEB view, not in
excel or other format :(

Fabien,

I have been looking at this a little bit for a different project. One
of the possible routes to doing this would be to create a Word Emitter.
While not trivial, this is a task that could is very do-able. I have
included a link on a decent article for the creation of Word Docs from
XML.

http://idealliance.org/papers/dx_xmle04/papers/02-03-01/02-0 3-01.html

I think the ideas here are in line for one possible route to create a
BIRT Word Emitter. There would still be some work to do, but it is a
helpful start.

Are you suggesting the route they took (as discussed in that link)? If
so, this would be a Windows only solution because it requires Word to be
installed. I've done plenty of Office COM Api stuff and is very
problematic.

Fabien,

For "doc" format, why not just open the html file in Word and choose
"save as..."->"(*.doc)"? Just let Micro$oft do what you want:).

For "xls" format, I've written an Xls emitter for BIRT. Currently it
supports BIRT 2.0 and 2.0.1. And I will release a new version once BIRT
2.1 is out. The new version will include some configurable settings such
as "show gridlines", "use fixed column width", etc. Please redirect to
my blog(http://qauck.blogspot.com) for more detail.

regards

Shawn

Hi Shawn,

of course your idea is quite astute :), but my reports will be generated
automatically in word format, so I need a word emitter exactly like the
one you're developping for Excel :).

So I'll continue searching for project like yours, or maybe try jasper
reports which can export documents in RTF format (but it seems to not be
as easy and powerful as BIRT :s).

Thank you everybody, if you have others ideas you're welcome ;)
