mailing lists vs newsgroups [message #147852] |

Hi!
I am a fan of newsgroup in contrast to mailing lists. I don't like mail dropping
in all the time (a different mail account would solve it yes, but that is plan
B) and a daily digest is not very readable. I just like newsgroups.
Is there a reason why the Eclipse Project uses both? Who decided for a
group/list to be either or?
Are there any plans of making "these" available as both newsgroups/mailing
lists?
Sincerely,
Jimisola

Yes. The mailing lists are for developers working on the individual projects
or people who want to follow what the developers are doing. The newsgroups
are for all questions about Eclipse, using Eclipse, programming with
Eclipse, etc.
Bugzilla, which you didn't mention, is for bug reports and feature requests.
Bugzilla is also used for code submissions, i.e., to fix a bug or provide a
new feature.

The functions of the newsgroups and mailing lists do not overlap.
There are three main newsgroups: eclipse.platform.swt for SWT-related
discussion (NOT including JFace), eclipse.tools.jdt for Java editing,
compiling, debugging discussions, and eclipse.platform for everything else.
All questions or discussion (like this one) not related to ongoing
development and planning go in one of these three.

No. (I can say this with confidence. In over two years, I have never seen
anything resembling a plan for the newsgroups. ;-)

To avoid the assumption that the lack of a plan reflects a decision not
to make one, does anyone know of a reason why the dev lists
(are/will/can) not be mirrored on newsgroups?
