JRE 1.5 problem [message #145315] Tue, 28 March 2006 01:41 Go to next message

Hi,

I'm a completely new user, so i'd appreciate anyone's helpful comments.

I've just installed eclipse 3.1.2 on my win98 machine, which already has
java 1.5 installed. Compiling and running scripts written with a text
editor works fine. Eclipse.exe however won't run at all. I just get an
dialogue box saying that java 1.4.1 is required, current version 1.4.0_01

Sun's website says that java 1.5 should run with programmes designed for
older versions. Has anyone come across this problem, or have any idea how
to fix it?

cheers,

dan

This question is asked and answered a lot - please try searching the
past messages before posting questions.

The short answer is that Eclipse is finding the older JRE on your system
- you need to tell it explicitly which version to use. Here is a page
that explains the details: http://eclipsewiki.editme.com/StartupProblems

Hope this helps,
Eric

Daniel,

Have a look at your system path and see if a product you have installed
may have also installed a JRE of its own and put a mention of it in the
system path.

The Oracle database client is notorious for doing this.

In almost all cases you can remove BOTH the path entry AND the offending
JRE supplied by the product, and your current JRE will work in 99.999%
of cases.
