Generics are here (no, not in eclipse) [message #139524] Fri, 03 October 2003 15:02 Go to next message
Eclipse UserFriend
Hi,

I've run across this post
( http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=bl9025%248ef%241%40onli ne.de&oe=UTF-8&output=gplain)
titled: "[ANN] IDE with support for upcoming Java 1.5 language features"

Excerpt:
[CodeGuide fully supports generic types as specified in JSR 14 and all
other language enhancements as specified in JSR 201: enums, varargs,
autoboxing, static imports and the enhanced for loop. Code completion,
compilation and refactorings are aware of the new features.

- Generify refactoring

The Generify refactoring is a powerfull tool which converts old
projects to make use of generic types. The generic parameter types
are infered by CodeGuide by analyzing the existing code of the
whole project. Generification affects variables, fields and classes.

Apparently somebody else is already committed to the idea of generics
and other features. Sadly, this feature is not committed on Eclipse's
3.0 plan (*). I think eclipse is leading in the area of Java IDEs and it
will be really sad to see it losing the lead.

If you want to see generics, enhanced for loops and more 1.5 features
vote for it here:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=36938

and that bug has a target of 3.0! (is on the plan list of 3.0)
so it is committed as far as i can see.

In the plan it says "The following work items are being actively
investigated, but we are not yet able to promise any solution for this
release".

I personally think that they will put it in 3.0
Because they will release 3.0 in Q2 of next year
so 1.5 will be near by then and a follow up (3.1?)
will likely be much later then 1.5.

But generics is still a moving target where are they now in
the version number 2.2?

The plan states this accurately we really want to have 1.5 support in 3.0.
We have reserved time to work on it. However, 1.5 isn't a fixed target and
we cannot commit to a moving target.

--erich

given that 1.5 isn't fully fixed
