If I generate a report on SQL Server 2005 I can manifest this report as
XML in a SOAP Web Service. This is the standard integration scheme for
placing reports into MS Office documents under .Net.
There is a separation in SQL Server 2005 of the ETL function from
Presentation function. (Whether or not this is a clean and correct
separation may be an open issue. In practical terms, however, no
reporting solution will be able to ignore the .Net'ing of reports. )
What, if anything, provides compatibility in BIRT? BIRT, like many BI
tools, seems to have no intermediate presentation language for its
report, other than to display it on a page. The coupling from DAO to
display is fairly strong.
How do I achieve BIRT integration with a .Net viewer? (A .Net viewer
being no more proprietary than a PDF viewer,)
For example, I might want to use a BIRT RCP to display (and manipulate)
SQL Server report XML. Is there a path for that integration?
Or, if BIRT's main role is processing the DAOs, how do I make a Web
Service from BIRT, preferably a service that integrates easily with MS
Office?

Hmm.. looks like no takers unfortunately. I think it's worth further
exploration. Just wish I had the time.
