How to use the Log View to a view a server's log file [message #90672]

Hi,

I am looking into using TPTP's log viewer to view a server's log file. I am
wondering what the right approach for this problem would be?

SCENARIO
We have server's running on a remote machine's that multiple users can
connect to and manage within Eclipse. I would like to allow the user's to
right click on a node and choose "View Log" which would then display the
server's log file in the TPTP "Log View".

ATTEMPT 1
I followed the instructions at
http://help.eclipse.org/help32/topic/org.eclipse.tptp.monito ring.doc.isv/tasks/tcreatingregexadapter.html
to create a rule-based adapter which translates the log file into the CBE
format.

ISSUES/PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
This appeared to work ok, except that the log was not updated in real time.
To get the latest version of the log file, it would need to be reimported.

Right clicking on the log file in the log navigator and choosing "Refresh ->
Refresh contents from the file system" appears to remove the log file.
Perhaps the refresh menu item should not be displayed in this case?

I did not want the user to work through the Import Log Wizard (to keep
things simpler for them) but would rather have them simply choose the server
in our management tree that they have connected to and choose "View Log". I
was able to get this to work but reused/copied sections of
org.eclipse.tptp.monitoring.logui.internal.wizards.ImportLog Wizard. Using
internal classes in general is not ideal. Is there another way to do this?

ATTEMPT 2
I then followed the instructions at

to configure the above rule-based adapter to allow for live application
monitoring.

ISSUES/PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
It seems that only one client can profile or attach to the logging agent.
As well, the profiling monitor allows the adapter to be terminated. How
does one configure a live logging adapter to create new agents when needed
for incoming requests to view a log?

Is there a way to display the log in the Log View without having the user
choose Project->Filter->Attach - Java Process->Fill in host and
port->Profile->Start Monitoring. I am trying to make things somewhat
simpler for the end user.

Hi Dan,

I think you'd be interested in this enhancement that I opened a while ago.
It hasn't been getting any attention so I don't think it'll be
implemented any time soon. You can add yourself to the CC list and vote
for it to increase its chances of getting implemented. You can also
comment on how this would be useful to you in the enhancement report:
