Visual Editor and Webtools [message #81670] Wed, 09 March 2005 12:25 Go to next message

Sorry to cross post, but this question does apply to both groups.

Does anyone have both the visual editor project and the webtools project
working together?

It seems from reading the eclipse site, that webtools is built against
3.1M5 and the visual editor only works with 3.0.

I'd very much like to be able to use both tools.

Thanks,

Luis

Not me. At least not with the same Eclipse version.

VE is for creating GUIs whereas Webtools is for Web and J2EE
applications. Do you really have a project that needs both plugins
within the same project?

I'd suggest you use Eclipse 3.0.1 and Eclipse 3.1M5 next to each other.
This is what I do.

Me neither.

The only way I could use Web Services and the Visual Editor was to create
two installations of Eclipse: One version 3.0.1 with the Visual Editor and
other stuff, plus a second installation, version 3.1M3, in which I installed
the Web Services.

It is however possible to run webapps (JSPs and the like on a Tomcat server)
from the Eclipse 3.0.1. installation together with the Visual Editor, as
long as you install the correct version of the Web tools on 3.0.1

A lot of bother, but at least it works. It would be nice if I could eventually
have just one version of Eclipse runnning all the delicious tools I have
grown to love!

This aside, it has now become clear to me why many companies decide to purchase
an IDE, such as WebSphere Studio, or JBuilder, coz playing around with all
these different versions of plug-ins seeing which works with other plug-ins
and which don't can be rather time consuming and irritating! An idea: maybe
Eclipse could compile CDs or ISO images (like the way many Linux distributions
are compiled) of a certain version and all the standard tools which have
been proven to work together and make these available for download (or even
purchase for a reasonable price: $20 is not unreasonable for an excellent
and complete IDE)

Food for thought?
