It looks like it has the potential to be an important Opensource BI player.
I'm not familiar enough with Bizgres to know if there are any specific
warehousing/OLAP capabilities that could be supported by BIRT?

Yes. The project itself looks very promising but they've selected
JasperReports already. I think your question should be addressed to them
if they have any specific integration plan for BIRT.
