Eclipse: Step by Step, the only book on Eclipse 2.1, is now available for
order.
This is not a 1000-page reference book listing every keystroke and menu
option without any context. Instead, Eclipse: Step by Step walks you
through real-world examples, culminating in a complete business application
using SWT and JDBC. Everything you need, from downloading to installation
to writing your first Java program, is all here in one simple, easy-to-read
book.
So, for those of you struggling with your first SWT application, this book
can help get you started. And as I noted, it's not based on Eclipse 2.0; it
already incorporates the features of Eclipse 2.1. Each chapter has a
complete checklist with screen shots and detailed instructions, so whether
this is your first foray into Java or you just want to learn the basics of
SWT, you can use this book to write a working application.
Available now for order at http://www.mc-store.com/5059.html, and soon on
Amazon.com and BarnesAndNoble.com.

"Eclipse in Action" is also based on Eclipse 2.1, and is available now at
the regular places like Amazon, BN, etc... There are also two free chapters,
downloadable examples, and an author's forum at our web site,
http://www.manning.com/gallardo .

Sorry, Ed, as I noted in email when Dan Kehn brought this to my attention, I
was only going by your marketing blurb, which doesn't mention version 2.1.
We will of course have the same information - excerpts, table of contents,
and all that good stuff - as soon as we're listed on Amazon. We'll be there
shortly. It was quite a trick getting from screen captures to print in two
months, let me tell you.
We're only just getting to press now because we thought that if we were
going to advertise version 2.1, it was crucial to show the actual screens
from the final release of version 2.1. I know how hard it is to keep up to
date and get to press quickly, so I just assumed you weren't using the
latest screen captures. Since my book has some 300 screen captures showing
each detailed step (hence the name!), it was quite challenging keeping up
with the constant changes in things like toolbars - things which were
changing right up until that last day. Did you find the time to redo your
screen shots to use the March 28th release, or did you just use older screen
shots (they were pretty close for the most part)?
We're also putting the finishing touches the mailing list for the book.
We'll use the standard Mailman interface, which we find to be pretty
powerful. You can join now if you want, at http://lists.plutabrothers.com,
but I haven't done much more than just get the lists in place.

Right at the end we had to redo all of our screen shots using the 2.1 final
release. Not only that but some of the steps we were describing (for example
adding a jar based on a class variable) changed in the last milestone or two
so they had to be rewritten. So I know exactly what you mean. ;-)
By the way we're doing a book promo over at
http://www.javaranch.com/bookpromo.jsp next month. Everybody's invited to
participate and get a chance to win one of several free books. I see Dan
Kehn & co. are doing one the following week, and the next week is open -
maybe you can sneak in there and we can have an Eclipse 3-fer!
