I upgraded my XAMPP from version 7 to 8.2 and installed xdebug following the instructions for version 8.2 on the web. Both XAMPP and xdebug are working flawlessly; however, when I run Eclipse 2022-12 it can't find xdebug. Furthermore, if I try to configure a debugger in Eclipse, Eclipse freezes. I downloaded Netbeans and it worked just fine with XAMPP 8, but I don't especially like Netbeans and would rather have Eclipse working for me. The only setting I was able to change in Preferences was the xdebug port - from 9000 to 9003. Something is off, but I don't know what after struggling with this for two days. Interesting enough, the log file does not report any problems besides a missing HOME variable. It seems to me that if there was something, it would appear here.

Unfortunately, I cannot see that anyone is experiencing this problem, as I have searched the web for Eclipse not connecting to / finding xdebug. So apparently, I'm the only one who has this issue. I'd appreciate any hints as to what the problem could be attributed to.

I only found out today that Eclipse does not support PHP version 8 and above, and that is therefore the answer to my problem above. According to GitHub, it seems that version 8 support will materialize in 2023 sometime. One can only hope...
