We have a custom setup based on Eclipse J2EE 2020-12. After a recent change (last few weeks) if we let P2 update various Oomph toolbars and menu items disappear. The version that still works is 1.21.0.v20210601-0619.

Currently besides the base Oomph features we also include these:

I have tried all kinds of things like adding in more of the oomph features, running -clean, restarting, etc. Sometimes I can get the icons to come back but it is not consistent. I have looked all through the logs and when things are broken I can't seem to find any errors listed and the About screens still show all the Oomph features/plugins.

I assume you are setting the preference:

Is the page Window -> Preferences -> Oomph Setup tasks available, or is that one of the things that disappears? If org.eclipse.oomph.setup.feature.group is installed but it's contributions aren't visible, it must be failing to start, but I would expect a logged message if that's the case...

The preference is set and the preferences pages are still there. In most cases the Editor contribution for Setup files and Repository Explorer are also still there.

The Setup toolbar entries, and OS Tool contributions (like System Explorer) and missing though. I can't find anything in the various Error and workspace logs though. If there is anywhere/thing in particular I can dump to help troubleshoot let me know.

Yes, they are still gone after opening a new window.

Also I'm not sure if it is related but alongside the buttons sometimes the Setup editor contribution is gone if a Setup file is open when the workspace is started. Seems like some sort of race condition?

If I set a breakpoint in the WorkingSetManager constructor and start the IDE with a setup editor open, it does indeed hit this breakpoint, but running the constructor does not result in an "Caused by: org.eclipse.core.runtime.InvalidRegistryObjectException: Invalid registry object" which sounds more like the registry is corrupt, which could cause endless different problems.

Corruption would track but at this point I can reproduce this on multiple boxes now (and getting more reports each day from internal users). The Editor contribution generally always seems to come back if I close all the files and restart which is what I was thinking a race condition.

The other thing that seems to work is going to Installation History and reverting back to a config prior to August 1st. Then everything is OK until I perform Setup tasks does the P2 update again.

The only other tracebacks I can cause see at this point are these two. I'm trying to remove the key bindings and working set configs from my setup to see what happens.

Note that the SetupEditor implements WorkingSetsActionBarContributor.PreviewDialog.Previewable so it's normal that the org.eclipse.oomph.workingsets.editor bundle must activate when the SetupEditor class is loaded. This is not a race condition. The org.eclipse.oomph.setup.editor bundle depends on the org.eclipse.oomph.workingsets.editor bundle. But in this latest exception too there is a indication of some problem with the extension registry because that namespace is registered by org.eclipse.oomph.workingsets

If I could reproduce your problem, I would be able to address it. But, even deliberately throwing a runtime exception from WorkingSetsUtil.getWorkingSetGroup does not make toolbar contributions go away. It does make the SetupEditor fail to open properly, but adding a bunch of guards when we don't know why resource factories can't be created or why packages aren't registered is likely never to fix any problems but rather to have the problem move from one place to another without ever addressing the underlying actual problem...

It would definitely be best if you could share what's needed for me to replicate the problem you are seeing.

I think there are two separate but related problems. The Setup Editor at least comes back if I close all the files and restart Eclipse. If there is a way to scan the registry and validate it I'm willing to do anything at this point! :)

For reproducing I'm good with sending anything that can help. Where/how is the best place to dump my .setup files (and if there is anything else that would help I can send). I can zip my installer folder if the forum allows zip uploads. One thing that might stop you is that it seems like if I do a clean install the problem goes away.

Thanks for all your help (and the awesome tools)! We've been using Oomph for a few years now and it makes my life a lot easier when I have a few hundred folks to support in Eclipse.

You could open a Bugzilla and share any files as attachments there. But please try to make a minimal example and make sure I can actually reproduce the problem following the steps you describe.

Also test if starting with -clean "fixes" the problem. And perhaps try also -debug to see if that shows information about potential problems.
