| Insert Spaces for Tabs - After the Fact [message #337053] | Fri, 24 July 2009 14:27 | |
| Eclipse User | | | | | It would be valuable for me to be able to paste into a text editor a block of text..
(eg: from an XL spreadsheet outputted as tab-delimited)

..and then (immediately) thereafter, have all those tabs changed to the
 number of spaces each represents.

(even though the editor doesn't let me specify as many spaces for tabs as
 is needed sometimes)

 Is that possible?

If not, 2nd best would be to understand when the editor decides to do that
 substitution.

Reading what postings I've been able to find, it appears that it's meant
to be only on ~new tab insertions~..
..and yet, I just had an experience which strongly suggests that it
 happens at other times.
 :
I spent /forever/ manually fixing up a table w/ tab size of 16..
..and then set it back to 3 to go back to my normal editing.
When I opened the file next, all my tab-formatting in the table was
screwed up - just as (I didn't check carefully enf) all the tabs had been
 replaced by 3 spaces.
