I just went through the installation instructions (here).

Everything went fine until Step 9 (clean and build). Albeit I cleaned everything, not only those with errors. The build result gives 1000 errors. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds as if the target platform is not correctly resolved and set. Try to re-execute the "Help->Perform Setup Tasks..." and see if it gives you any errors.

Yup, did "Help->Perform Setup Tasks..." before Clean/Build. Currently "Perform Setup Tasks..." is greyed out.
Are we even allowed to Clean/Build from Eclipse since this is a maven project?

It is usually only greyed out if there is still a job open for it. Click on the little 2 yellow-blue arrows at the bottom right of the Eclipse IDE and the window should open up. Close that first and the menu should not be greyed out anymore.
