[aeri] [poll] Should eclipse.org collect error reports for 3rd party plugin vendors? [message #1704907] Mon, 10 August 2015 10:39
Eclipse UserFriend
There was a long discussion on cross-projects whether the automated error reporting should anonymize class names of non-eclipse.org classes or not [1].

The arguments are:
1. problem reports for projects like Nebula or Sapphire are not actionable because the interesting information is missing
2. clients of those projects usually do not know that their code breaks and thus should be informed about this to give all eclipse users an over-all better user experience.

On the other hand, there might be some privacy issues if eclipse would start collecting every error report.

To mitigate that, 3rd party vendors could opt-in to have eclipse.org collect error-reports for them or can ask their users whether errors mentioning any of their classes should be sent to their project's error reporting service.

To decide whether we should take this forward, we need some input from the larger eclipse community (users, committers, and potential 3rd party adopters). If you are interested, please cast your voice in this small survey [2]. The results of this will be taken to the Eclipse board of directors to make an informed decision on how to continue with this request.

Thank you.
