There are other topics on this subject, that I have reviewed and tried the solutions, resetting perspective, restarting eclipse, etc. They have no effect. This was working fine Friday, then on Monday it quit. At least two of us have the problem. Clicking on the value cause the symbol name to be displayed in the bottom part of the pane. I have uploaded a screen shot of the problem. The variables view is from a debug session stopping at main. It remains a problem as I go into the product

No one indicated the root cause of the problem. Where and how is the variables view defined?

I using:
Eclipse IDE for C/C++ Developers

Version: Mars Milestone 5 (4.5.0M5)
Build id: 20150205-1617

On RHEL7 Workstation running a gnome3 desktop

I just ran into this same problem. The way I fixed it was by

1. Go into the Variables View menu.
2. Select layout.
3. Click on Select Columns.
4. Activating all of the columns
5. Repeat steps 1-3 and deactivate all of the columns except for Name and Value.

This link shows how to access the Variables View menu

Hope this helps
