The translation infrastructure of eclipse is closed:

http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/article.php?id=29630&g roup=eclipse.platform

A translation infrastructure should be open, especially for such a huge and dynamic open source project like eclipse!

-

Additional use:
- translate eclipse
- translate e.g. RCP based applications.
- embed in RCP applications, thus enabling customers of RCP based applications to translate the application themselves.

-

Eclipse should try to find partners to create an "Localization and Translation Tools" project.

This would be of great benefit for eclipse and especially the RCP.

The BIRT project should benefit from such project, too.

I really agree with this effort!
Especially for the RCP developers it would be an enormous improvement, to
offer the customer the possibility to select the language.

Google give a tool to localize web pages.
Maybe we can use it.

A program could externalize all it's strings and then run it via a
translator.

I like you enthousiasm, but at this stage this would not help.

One could make an research about available

- Open Source translation tools (if possible java)
- Commercial solutions, with tendency to Open Sourcing

As to my knowledge, this is how tools work.

The main thing is not only to translate, but to minimize effort for translations (translating a word with a similar meaning only once).

But all those details are not relevant at this stage.

[note: this is just a project _suggestion_ to the eclipse.foundation]

The enthusiasm is nice but, I have yet to see a non-human translator that
works. The best there is, is barely adequate for the amusement of those that
know multiple languages. The mistakes they make are hilarious, as I'm sure
you are aware.

Translation has to still be done by real humans, unfortunately. The
AI-translation-state-of-the-art isn't even close yet.

Of course.

My suggestion relates to tools, which assist humans to make translations
/ localizations.
