change sets and create patch problem [message #27080] Wed, 30 July 2008 22:49 Go to next message

With subclipse I can right click, chose "Create patch..." and put it on
the clipboard. Then I can attach it to a mylyn task in bugzilla.

With subversive this menu item does not appear. When I first start
eclipse I see a Local->Create Patch... menu item. It makes a patch on
the filesystem. Then I never see this menu item again nor the "Local"
tree item where it resides. I therefore have no Branch menu item either.

I have hunted around in google, I'm about the only person that shows in
there mentioning this problem...I posted to "newcomer".

The menu items appear just fine in the Team menu off the project. I
want to integrate this with mylyn and have a sort of code review thing
going on. Developer attaches patch, another looks it over and labels
the bug fix as reviewed. To make sure changes are related to the task
it would be benificial to have the change-set menu working as well.

The documentation says I should see it...I don't. I ran into a few
clues I tried...I upgraded svn, used the 1.2.0 version of subversive,
and installed the JavaHL thingy....1.5 Behavior hasn't changed.

Ideas?

Hello Noah,

The Subversive 1.2.0 version is an very old experimental version which do
not supports Eclipse 3.4 version (but I'm not sure what version of Eclipse
IDE you use because I found no corresponding information in your post).
The latest Subversive version is distributed from the Eclipse.org site.
SVN connectors for this version still distributed from the Polarion.org
site. More about the latest Subversive version you can read at:
http://www.eclipse.org/subversive/downloads.php

But in any case Create Patch menu item must be shown even with the old
Subversive 1.2.0 version. So, please try installing of the latest
Subversive version into the clean Eclipse IDE instance.

I'm using the subversion from the ganymede distribution. I had to
download connectors. The SVNKit has two versions, 1.1.7 and 1.2.0 - I
tried both. Everything seems to have a build version of
2.0.1.I20080612-1500. As far as I can tell I'm using the latest version
of everything. The link you provided doesn't have any update sites I'm
not using that I can see.

I get a create patch menu item in the project explorer area. Where I'm
not getting it and want it is in the sych view where I'm using mylyn to
group change-sets by task.

Thank you for detailed information. Yes, Subversive version which is
distributed from the Ganymede update site is 0.7.1.I20080612-1500 and
2.0.1.I20080612-1500 is the version of corresponding connectors).

Subversive provides access to all applicable actions in the Synchronize
View context. So, in order to create patch from the Synchronize View
please first call pop-up menu, then use menu item "Local->Create Patch...".

Sigh, it just bugs the hell out of me when I get directions to do
something when I've made it clear the problem is NOT my failure to
understand documentation. From my original post:

"With subversive this menu item does not appear. When I first start
eclipse I see a Local->Create Patch... menu item. It makes a patch on
the filesystem. Then I never see this menu item again nor the "Local"
tree item where it resides. I therefore have no Branch menu item either."

I am not sure that the original post specifically said that it is the
context (right button) menu in the Synchronize view in the Team
Synchronizing perspective that is the issue.

I can reproduce the problem. The first time I activate the context
menu in the Synchronize view it has "Local" and "Remote" sub-menus. If
I dismiss the menu without selecting anything (click outside it) then
activate it again the "Local" and "Remote" sub-menus do not appear.

You can get them back by closing the Synchronize view and then opening
it again using "Window/Show view". Closing and reopening the
perspective also brings them back. In either case, they vanish again
as soon as the menu has appeared once.

You don't have to click outside. You can choose to create a patch too.
Perhaps other things, I don't know (I just tried "Show properties" and
it does the same). The whole submenu and everything under it go away.

Furthermore, the create patch menu item in the _context menu of the
synchronize view_ (I've never seen "Local" any other place) won't create
a patch into the clipboard like it should, like subclipse does and
subversive does in the _context menu of the project explorer_. It just
puts you into an output to file dialog.

It's broken, almost completely. It's too bad really, the subversive
interface to branching and tagging is much, much better.

Hello Noah, Owen,

Thank you for the steps to reproduce. The problem really exists in the
Eclipse 3.4 and we will investigate this issue.

Will that be in the update site?

Hello Noah,

The fix will be published on the ".../weekly-site" update sites like and
all other fixes until critical set of fixes is collected or graduation is
complete.

OK, well I'll just have to track that down I guess.

Well, I got the update.

The menu appears all the time now but the create patch command from the
synchronize menu still does not give me the option to create it in the
clipboard. It takes me directly to a file save dialog.

In all other places and with other source control plugins you get this
dialog:
