I've run into a problem while attempting to upgrade to the latest
Ganymede release for C++ development.

After unpacking the zip exactly as it came, into a brand new directory
of course, I get the following error dialog when attempting to execute
(eventually, "as an administrator") eclipse.exe:

"The Eclipse executable launcher was unable to locate its companion
shared library."

Then eclipse fails to start.

I am using Vista 32 HP, latest updates, with Sun Java 6 (Update 10)
(build 1.6.0_10-rc2-b31) and MinGW/MSYS tools if its applicable. I did
not have an issue when using the previous release zip:
"eclipse-cpp-ganymede-win32" (Other than being a complete noob). Both
are version 3.4 according to documentation. I will fall back to the
later as a work around, but I thought I'd make it known that there's
probably a configuration problem with the distribution and/or ask for
help because I could be missing something face-palm-stupid. I don't know
if it warrants a bug report, as I have a "weird" setup and I'm not sure
if its my fault or not, which is why I bring it up here.

Multiple re-install and re-download attempts were made with no
difference in behavior. I also noticed that using the non-SR1 distro
with a new install produced the same problem, which is weird, because it
worked just fine in the past. I would guess that I am missing a critical
library, but the install documentation only requests that I have a
certain version, or higher, of Java, which I have and to simply unpack
the contents into an empty directory. I tried many places, including
"Program Files" and the root of my drive, with modified permissions just
to make sure Windows wasn't the problem. Of course, maybe an "update" is
messing with me here. I can only speculate at this point and the error
message is very unhelpful in regards to helping me pinpoint the problem.

Anyways, keep up the good work and thank you for freeing me from the
bonds of Visual Studio!

Bryan,

It might be better to ask on the CDT newsgroup. You might want to
search it for previous questions like this. Use the "Search this group"
box in:

http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/thread.php?group=eclipse.t ools.cdt

I find that when I unzip I have to do chmod +x on the *.exe and *.dll in
the installation, so it might well be the case that your problems are
caused by the unzip utility you are using...

This is just a shot in the dark, but are you specifying the JVM for
Eclipse to use, as described in http://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse.ini ?

I figured out my problem. I used the Windows unzip utility which can't
handle the long file names. I knew it was something stupid. Thanks for
the replies.
