Since the dawn of time (at Eclipse, anyway) the newsgroups have been
password protected to prevent junk and spambots, but at the cost of
accessibility.

A few months ago we removed password protection from the list archives
and from the group archives after successfully regenerating the entire
archive set to mangle e-mail addresses.

Today I'm ready to remove the password protection from the Simple Web
Interface, which would enable hassle-free, no-subscription-required
access to our newsgroups. The NewsPortal software, which displays about
2,000 news messages per day, now munges e-mail addresses embedded in the
message body, as well as those in the header.

Please see below for an example (still password-protected):

http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/article.php?id=869&gro up=eclipse.foundation#869

This is in response to https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=110912

I don't think I'll bother looking into SPAM-proofing e-mails on the news
server itself because of the inherent complexity with the beast that is
innd, but this solution should improve accessibility to Eclipse
information in a big way.

Please have a look at the Simple Web Interface messages and give me your
feedback.

Denis

Will the newsgroup servers still be password protected? I use Thunderbird.

Yes, the news server won't change. It doesn't spamproof any messages,
and I'm not about to try tinkering with it =)

Just a word of encouragement and adoration to you, Denis.

You've done a great job managing many aspects of Eclipse's web face and
deserve more than I could ever offer.

Which is

THANKS!!!!!

Thanks for the pat-on-the-back, James. I'm just doing my best to make
the resources easier to use.
