Friend of Eclipse? [message #259190] Wed, 25 June 2008 17:33 Go to next message

I submitted a $35 donation to Eclipse via the "Friends of Eclipse" on the
main site. I'm getting an odd message when I try to log in as a Friend of
Eclipse:

You have successfully logged in.
Although you're logged in, you're not eligible for the Friend of Eclipse
Benefits. Consider becoming a Friend of Eclipse today!

What does this mean? The site specifically said if one donates at least
$35, one is entitled to be a Friend of Eclipse. Not that it means much to
me (I've already downloaded Ganymede <g>), but I would think that if
something is promised, then the promise should be fulfilled. No?

I would suggest sending email to friends@eclipse.org to get any problem
fixed.

Unfortunately, that email address doesn't come through. Is there another
way to get in touch with them?

You could try webmaster@eclipse.org
But keep in mind that most of the Eclipse employees are probably well
along the path to intoxication right now at the committers Ganymede
celebration party.

By the way, are you sure you are logging in with the same email address
that you gave when you made the donation? I just did my donation this
morning and was immediately able to download using the Friends mirror.

So what you're saying is that once you donate money, you're ignored and
there's no responsibility of support, or upholding of promises made in
advertising.
That's the open source way!

Jim,

The webmaster already changed the website to explain the current
limitation. He watches these newsgroups. I'm not sure if the changes
are are explicit enough. Again, we're sorry you're ticked off and
we're annoyed with ourselves for not having consider this sooner
something that seems quite obvious in hindsight.

Sorry for any confusion that has resulted from this discussion. It was
never my intention to ignore any Friends of Eclipse donations. Even if
there only for 2c! We appreciate all donations and are working on
improving the system to provide better feedback on when to expect your
benefits to be enabled. I've hijacked the bug you've created to provide
more details on how we plan on improving the system.

To clear up any misunderstanding with the system I offer this explanation.
When you make a payment through Paypal, it can take anywhere from 2
seconds to 5 days to clear your payment with them for a variety of
different reasons. Our system for granting benefits will only receive a
validation from Paypal once the payment has been cleared.

You can track the progress of these improvements to the Friends Donation
system here: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=238481

You should not put words into anyone's mouth in a condescending or
insulting way, especially those who give their time for free in an
effort to help you. Doing so is definitely NOT the open-source way.
